Verb + object + to-infinitive

A verb followed by an object and to + base verb · CEFR B1–B2

Definition

In a verb + object + to-infinitive pattern, the object of the first verb is normally the understood subject of the infinitive: Maya asked Leo to wait. Common verbs include ask, tell, want, expect, allow, advise, encourage, and persuade.

Examples

  • Maya asked Leo to wait outside.

Leo is the object of asked and the understood subject of wait.

  • We expect the train to arrive on time.

The train is expected to perform the infinitive action.

  • The doctor advised Maya to rest.

Maya receives the advice and is understood as the person who should rest.

Verb + to-infinitive vs. verb + object + to-infinitive

Same understood subject

Maya decided to leave.

Maya is the subject of both decided and leave.

Object controls the infinitive

Maya persuaded Leo to leave.

Leo is the object of persuaded and the understood subject of leave.

The presence of an object changes who is understood to perform the infinitive action.

Different verbs require different complementation patterns

Some verbs require an object before the infinitive, some allow it optionally, and others do not use this pattern. Passive versions often make the object of the active sentence the grammatical subject.

  • Leo was advised to rest.

The active object becomes the passive subject.

  • We allowed the visitors to enter.

Allow requires the affected person or group before the infinitive in this pattern.

Common mistakes

Maya suggested Leo to wait.

Maya suggested that Leo wait.

Suggest does not normally use the object + to-infinitive pattern.

The doctor advised to Maya to rest.

The doctor advised Maya to rest.

The object follows advise directly, without to before the person.
