Past perfect

An event completed before another past point · CEFR B1–C1

Definition

The past perfect places an event or state before another past event or reference point. It is formed with had + past participle and makes the earlier relationship clear.

Form

subject + had + past participle

Examples

  • The train had left before we reached the platform.

The train left first; we reached the platform later.

  • She had never seen snow until that winter.

The experience had not happened before a particular time in the past.

  • By the time the guests arrived, we had finished dinner.

Dinner was already complete at the later past reference point.

Past perfect vs. past simple

Past simple

When I arrived, the meeting started.

The meeting started when or after I arrived.

Past perfect

When I arrived, the meeting had started.

The meeting started before I arrived.

Started continues the main past sequence. Had started moves back to an event that was already in progress or complete before the stated past moment.

It is not needed in every past sequence

Words such as after and before can make the order clear without the past perfect. The past perfect is most useful when the earlier relationship needs emphasis or could otherwise be misunderstood.

  • After she finished dinner, she went for a walk.

After already makes the sequence clear, so two past-simple forms are enough.

  • She had finished dinner before the guests arrived.

The past perfect emphasizes that dinner was complete before the later arrival.

Common mistakes

The film had began before we sat down.

The film had begun before we sat down.

The past perfect needs the past participle begun, not the past-simple form began.

She has left before I arrived.

She had left before I arrived.

The earlier event is related to a past reference point, so use had left, not the present perfect.
