Mixed conditionals
Definition
A mixed conditional combines a condition and result that refer to different times. The most common patterns link an unreal past condition to a present result, or an unreal present condition to a past result.
Examples
-
If I had taken that job, I would live in Berlin now.
A different past decision would create a different present situation.
-

The unreal past condition affects present ability.
Mixed conditional vs. third conditional
If I had studied medicine, I would have become a doctor.
Both the condition and result refer to the past.
If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
The past condition is linked to a present result.
A third conditional keeps both parts in the unreal past. A mixed conditional crosses time periods because the consequence belongs to a different time.
The time relationship matters more than the label
Mixed conditionals are not one fixed formula. The verb forms must reflect the actual time of the unreal condition and the actual time of its consequence.
-
If he were less cautious, he might have accepted the offer yesterday.
A present personality trait is connected to an unreal past action.
-
If they had repaired the heating, the house would be comfortable now.
A past action is connected to a present state.
