Locative inversion
Definition
Locative inversion places a location or direction expression at the front of the clause and puts the verb before the subject: On the hill stood a castle. It is common in descriptive and literary styles.
Examples
-

The location is presented first, followed by the verb and then the subject.
-

-

A direction phrase is fronted and the verb precedes the subject.
Neutral order vs. locative inversion
An old castle stood on the hill.
The subject comes before the verb.

The setting comes first, and the subject follows the verb.
Locative inversion changes information flow and often introduces a new subject after an established setting.
It is restricted by verb type and style
The pattern is most natural with verbs of position, existence, appearance or movement, such as stand, sit, lie, come, go, appear and rise. It is less common with ordinary transitive verbs.
-
At the end of the road stood a small church.
Stand naturally describes position.
-
Into the room walked the director.
A movement verb supports the directional inversion.
