Choosing a, an, the or no article · CEFR A1–C1

Definition

The articles a, an and the help show how a noun is being identified. A/an introduces one non-specific singular countable noun, the points to something specific or already identifiable, and many plural or uncountable nouns take no article when used generally.

Examples

  • I bought a notebook on the way home.

A introduces one notebook that has not been identified before.

  • The notebook is on my desk.

The now identifies the particular notebook already mentioned.

  • Music helps me concentrate.

No article is used because music refers to the idea in general.

A/an vs. the

A/an

We saw a dog outside.

The dog is introduced as one unspecified member of a group.

The

The dog followed us home.

The listener can identify the dog from the previous sentence.

Use a/an when the singular countable noun is not yet specific. Use the when the intended person or thing can be identified from context, shared knowledge or earlier mention.

General meanings often use no article

Plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns commonly appear without an article when they refer to a whole class, activity or substance rather than a specific example.

  • Children need regular sleep.

The plural noun refers to children generally.

  • Water freezes at zero degrees Celsius.

The uncountable noun refers to the substance in general.

Common mistakes

She is engineer.

She is an engineer.

A singular countable job noun normally needs a/an.

The life is expensive here.

Life is expensive here.

Use no article when life refers to the idea generally.
