About Kahoot!

Kahoot! is probably the most widely recognised classroom game platform globally. Students join a session via their own devices, answer multiple-choice questions against a countdown timer, and compete on a live leaderboard. Teachers create or select quiz sets. The format rewards speed as much as accuracy, making it excellent for energising a class but less suited to measured language practice. There is a large library of user-created ELT content, though quality varies. The platform has expanded significantly and now includes self-paced modes, challenges, and team play.

Who is it for?

Good fit for

End-of-unit review when the class is flagging and a competitive leaderboard is what they need. Everyone has a phone or tablet.

Less suitable for

Speaking practice, nuanced grammar work, or situations where device access is limited.

Editorial assessment

Biggest strength

Universally recognised, easy to set up, and genuinely energising for students who enjoy competition.

Biggest weakness

Speed-based scoring disadvantages slower students and encourages guessing over thinking. Weak on speaking.

Editorial note

Kahoot! is familiar and reliable for review, but it is a general quiz tool rather than an ELT-specific one. ELT relevance depends entirely on what content the teacher builds or finds.
