Explanation
We use SO and SUCH to add emphasis or to express a strong degree. SO comes before an adjective or adverb. SUCH comes before a noun phrase (with or without an adjective).
SO + adjective / adverb: "It was so cold." / "She speaks so quickly." SUCH + (a/an) + (adjective) + noun: "It was such a cold day." / "They are such interesting people."
Both SO and SUCH can be followed by a THAT clause to show a result: "It was so cold that I couldn't sleep." / "It was such a cold night that I couldn't sleep."
Examples
- The music was so loud that I couldn't hear myself think.

Common Mistakes
-
The weather was such cold.
→
The weather was so cold. / It was such cold weather.
'Such' is followed by a noun (phrase), not a bare adjective. Use 'so' before adjectives alone.
-
It was so a good film.
→
It was such a good film.
Use 'such' (not 'so') before a noun phrase. The pattern is: such + a/an + adjective + noun.
-
They were such kind that they helped for free.
→
They were so kind that they helped for free.
'Kind' here is an adjective without a noun — use 'so', not 'such'.
-
It was such beautiful place.
→
It was such a beautiful place.
With a singular countable noun, 'such' must be followed by 'a/an': 'such a beautiful place'.
